Subject Matter Expert

Dr. Deon van der Merwe holds a D.Litt. et Phil. in Psychology and started his career in higher education in 1989 as a student counsellor at the former Rand Afrikaans University (RAU), now the University of Johannesburg (UJ). As he had a passion for teaching and learning, he soon became involved in the field of academic development. He planned, developed and implemented a learning centre at RAU and UJ which focused on language and literacies development, learning development, tutor and mentor development as well as foundation and extended degree programmes. To effectively provide development in all these areas, the focus shifted from student development to also include staff, programme, curriculum and policy development. At UJ, he was involved in enrolment management where he focused specifically on access and placement testing, First Year Experience (FYE), tracking and monitoring of student performances, and identifying and addressing at-risk programmes and gateway modules.

Recently, he became involved in private higher education, where he also acted as Academic Head and Academic Director of various private higher education institutions. He currently also consults as teaching and learning development specialist to various institutions.

He furthermore lectures in various fields of expertise, which initially focussed on the field of Psychology. He ultimately extended his field of expertise into that of organisational development and is a research supervisor for numerous Masters’ dissertations and Doctoral theses.

Deon has served on numerous higher education committees (national and international), HEQC audit panels, education-related committees, academic senates and academic boards. He has presented papers at various national and international conferences.
